Workshops

This one and a half day (1.5) day workshop will focus on financial management activities necessary to support development and delivery of health services. The workshop will address matters that health directors and managers need to have an understanding of and be able to do. The workshop is a blend of large group activities, small group discussions, and individual work. Using an interactive approach that supports the First Nations Health Managers Association Competency Framework, this workshop will help participants achieve the following objectives:

1. Participants will understand the key concepts of funding and proposals; funding and reporting;
financial analysis and reporting; budgeting and variances; accounting basics, policies and procedures; accountability, etc.
2. Participants will apply their knowledge to scenarios with a view to improving health services financial management activities.

The workshop objectives will help you to develop new knowledge and skills so that you will enhance your capacity to plan and manage finances.

This one-day workshop will cover the critical elements that a Health Director should be aware of and the things they should be able to do to improve the effectiveness of health governance for their First Nation. Participants will engage in practical exercises that address relevant issues. Using an interactive approach, this workshop will cover the critical elements a Health Director should be aware of and things they should be able to do to improve the effectiveness of health governance for their First Nation. This workshop will help participants achieve the following objectives:

1. Participants will gain a better understanding of the critical elements of governance: roles and responsibilities; planning; policies; finance and information; people, governance operations; health and governance and their role in the facilitation of governance activities.
2. Participants will be able to recommend, facilitate and apply governance tools and also develop problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic planning skills.

The workshop objectives will assist you to enhance your capacity as a Health Director to support improvements in health services governance activities.

This one and a half day (1.5) workshop will cover the critical elements that a Health Portfolio councillor should be aware of and the things they should be able to do to improve the effectiveness of health governance for their First Nation. Using an interactive approach, this workshop will cover the critical elements a Health Portfolio councillor should be aware of and things they should be able to do to improve the effectiveness of health governance for their First Nation. This workshop will help participants achieve the following objectives:

1. Participants will gain a better understanding of the critical elements of governance: roles and responsibilities; planning; policies; finance and information; people, governance operations; and health and governance.
2. Participants will be able to apply governance tools and also develop problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic planning skills.

The workshop objectives will assist you to enhance your capacity as a Health Portfolio capacity and identify opportunities for governance and health services improvements.

This one day workshop will focus on determinants of health and epidemiology and how health professionals can facilitate health planning. It is a blend of large group activities, small group discussions, and individual work. Using an interactive approach that supports the First Nations Health Managers Association Competency Framework, this workshop will help participants achieve the following objectives:
1. Participants will understand the key concepts of determinants of health and epidemiology
2. Participants will know how to use key concepts of determinants of health and epidemiology to improve health planning

The workshop objectives will assist you to make the best use of health determinants and epidemiology to support decision-making and health planning.

This two-day workshop will address the critical elements of governance: roles and responsibilities; planning; policies; finance and information; people, governance operations; health and governance. Members of the leadership group may include a Health Board, Health Committee, and Chief and Council. Participants working in community groups will engage in practical exercises that address relevant issues.

Using an interactive approach, this workshop will cover the critical elements health leaders responsible for governance activities should be aware of and things they should be able to do to improve the effectiveness of health governance for their First Nation. This workshop will help participants achieve the following objectives:

1. Participants will gain a better understanding of the critical elements of governance: roles and responsibilities; planning; policies; finance and information; people, governance operations; health and governance.
2. Participants will be able to apply governance tools, develop solutions to community issues along with supportive action plans and also develop problem-solving, decision-making, and strategic planning skills.

The workshop objectives will assist community health leadership groups to enhance their capacity in health governance and develop an action plan for making ongoing improvements in health services governance activities.

This one-day workshop is for individuals that are eligible for and interested in pursuing the PLAR path to certification as a Certified First Nations Health Manager (CFNHM), and will help participants develop a PLAR portfolio. Participants bring content outlined in the PLAR Guide to complete their PLAR portfolio. Participants are provided with a workbook to help develop their portfolio. This workshop will assist participants to achieve the following objectives:

• Participants will gain a better understanding of the PLAR policy, process and tips to develop a portfolio with essential content.
• Participants will receive individual coaching to help develop their portfolio.
• Participants will engage in activity to develop their portfolio.

The workshop objectives will assist to confirm your eligibility to submit and complete a substantial portion of your PLAR portfolio.

This two-day workshop will focus on program and project management; how they are alike, how they are different and how together they help your health services work better. The workshop is a blend of large group activities, small group discussions, and individual work. Using an interactive approach that supports the First Nations Health Managers Association Competency Framework, this workshop will help participants achieve the following objectives:
1. Participants will understand the key concepts of program management and project management.
2. Participants will be able to apply best practices of program management and project management to improve their health services.

The workshop objectives will help you to be able to continually assess how programs and projects are doing, whether your process is on track and what you can do to adjust, if necessary.

This one day workshop will focus on strategic thinking and strategic planning and how health professionals can facilitate health planning and performance management. It is a blend of large group activities, small group discussions, and individual work. Using an interactive approach that supports the First Nations Health Managers Association Competency Framework, this workshop will help participants achieve the following objectives:
1. Participants will understand the key concepts of strategic thinking and strategic planning.
2. Participants will know how to use strategic thinking and strategic planning to improve their health services.

The workshop objectives will enhance your capabilities to participate in or lead strategic thinking and planning activities for your organization.

This one-day workshop will focus on tools to help make decisions and solve problems. The workshop is a blend of large group activities, small group discussions, and individual work. Using an interactive approach that supports the First Nations Health Managers Association Competency Framework, this workshop will help participants achieve the following objectives:

1. Participants will understand the key concepts of decision-making and problem-solving.
2. Participants will be able to apply decision-making and problem-solving tools in their work environments.

The workshop objectives will assist you to up your game in problem-solving and decision-making and assist others to make improvements.

This one-day workshop will focus on tools to help understand and upgrade human resources policies and practices. The workshop is a blend of large group activities, small group discussions, and individual work. Using an interactive approach that supports the First Nations Health Managers Association Competency Framework, this workshop will help participants achieve the following objectives:

1. Participants will understand the key elements of human resource management and their relationship to the development, delivery and evaluation of First Nation Health Services.
2. Participants will be able to apply human resource management tools enabling them to work with people, manage change and improve HR recruitment, retention and performance evaluation activities.

The workshop objectives will assist you to enhance your capacity to address ever increasing complex situations in human resource management.
