Due to the complex OCAP®, governance, ethical and privacy considerations around the collection of biological specimens for research, holding space for First Nations to reflect and have conversations on the topic of biobanking and genomic research is essential. Kayla Boileau and Maria Santos from the First Nations Information Governance Centre (FNIGC) will share some of the work they are doing in this area.


The objective of this session is to build awareness around biobanking and genomic research; examine the potential benefits and relevance in First Nations communities; and share the potential risks, considerations, and supports needed when communities or individuals decide to engage in biobanking and genomic research.


FNIGC seeks to increase knowledge on the topic of biobanking and genomic research including among health practitioners who may be approached by researchers to collaborate on such studies. In the future, FNIGC plans to…
