FNHMA and Healthcare Excellence Canada Honour First Nations Health Leader At Conference

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – November 8, 2023 – The First Nations Health Managers Association (FNHMA) and Healthcare Excellence Canada announced the recipient of the 2023 Excellence in Health Leadership – Innovative Leaders Award today at the FNHMA 11th Annual National Conference, in St. John’s, Newfoundland.


In partnership with Healthcare Excellence Canada (HEC), the FNHMA is excited to present Albert Jimmy, health director of the Onion Lake Health Centre in Saskatchewan, with the 2023 Excellence in Health Leadership – Innovative Leaders Award. Nominated for his commitment to improving the health department within Onion Lake, Mr. Jimmy has dedicated more than 50 years to the community, including 37 years in his role as Health Director.


“Mr. Jimmy’s nominations spoke of his unwavering commitment and painted a picture of a dedicated First Nations health leader that deserves to be recognized and celebrated,” states Marion Crowe, FNHMA CEO. “Mr. Jimmy has devoted his career to supporting the health and wellness of the community. He’s not only a health director, but also a community health champion.”

“It’s an honour to present this award to Albert Jimmy alongside FNHMA,” says Jennifer Zelmer, President and CEO of HEC. “It’s clear from those who nominated Mr. Jimmy that he’s made his mark as an innovative leader dedicated to making improvements to healthcare in his community of Onion Lake.”

About the Award

The Excellence in Health Leadership – Innovative Leaders Award is designed to recognize those who have displayed a sincere, long-term commitment and strong leadership skills in First Nations health management in Canada. Nominees must have advanced health management capabilities in First Nations communities. The award is given to those who have shown evidence of modeling their own continuous learning and capacity development and support of continuous learning in their employees, and demonstrated work dedicated to health system improvement and innovation.
